Why Sportsbooks Limit +EV Bettors (And What to Do About It)

Updated May 18, 2025 | 11:34 am CDT by Sam Smith

If you’re betting smart — consistently finding value and turning a profit — you’re probably going to find yourself getting limited: Restricted markets, bet amount limits or even full shutdowns. If you’re wondering “why was my banned?” or what to do about sportsbook limits, this guide will walk you through the how and why — and, more importantly, what to do next.

Ditch the guesswork. Start making smarter, sharper Portfolio Betting page now!

Why Sportsbooks Limit +EV Bettors (And What to Do About It)

Sportsbooks aren’t just in the business of taking bets — they’re in the business of making money. And that means minimizing risk.

When a bettor consistently identifies pricing errors, beats closing lines or otherwise exhibits behavior associated with +EV (positive expected value) betting, the sportsbook flags them. From the book’s perspective, this bettor is not a customer — they’re a liability.

That’s where sportsbook limits come in.

What Are Sportsbook Limits?

Sportsbook limits refer to the maximum amount a bettor is allowed to wager on a specific event, market or bet type. Limits can be:

  • Global: Set for all s (e.g., max $5,000 bet on an NFL side)
  • Per-: Dynamically adjusted based on bettor behavior

If you’re consistently getting bet limits lowered, it’s often because you’ve been identified as a sharp bettor — which is a good thing, ultimately.

In more aggressive cases, books may:

  • Limit you to pennies per bet
  • Restrict you from promotional offers or odds boosts
  • Soft-ban your (where the stays open but is functionally useless)
  • Fully suspend or ban the outright

Why Was My Banned?

Books rarely tell you the exact reason, but here are the most common triggers:

  • Consistent Closing Line Value): You beat the closing line too often.
  • Too many promos crushed: You exploited s, boosts or mispriced props.
  • Suspicious bet timing: You bet right before a line moved, especially in niche markets.
  • Arbitrage or middling behavior
  • Too sharp in niche markets: Women’s sports, alt lines or obscure props are often watched closely.

If you’re Googling “why was my banned?”, the answer is often: You were too good. Again, this is a good thing.

How to Avoid Betting Restrictions

If you’re a profitable bettor, there’s no guaranteed way to stay off the radar forever — but you can absolutely delay the inevitable. Here’s how:

1. Mix in “recreational” behavior

  • Occasionally bet parlays, same-game parlays (SGPs), or non +EV plays
  • Place bets on mainstream markets like NFL sides or NBA totals at peak hours
  • Don’t always max bet every edge — stay varied

Obviously, you can still do these things in a +EV way when you use Portfolio EV. We have a Parlay Builder AND data for betting normal game lines. So you don’t have to shirk your process entirely just to stay off the sportsbooks’ radar.

2. Use Parlays Strategically

One underused strategy is masking sharp action within parlays.

Books often have higher limits on parlays and are less likely to scrutinize them closely — even if you’re combining multiple +EV legs. That’s because parlays typically print money for the sportsbooks. However, by bundling sharp plays into two- or three-leg parlays, you can maintain higher volume without raising as many red flags.

Portfolio EV’s Parlay Builder helps you string together multiple +EV bets with correlated value, keeping your profile diversified while still +EV.

3. Limit bet size growth

If you start betting $5 and then jump to $500 on every edge overnight, that’s a red flag. Increase gradually.

4. Use multiple sportsbooks wisely

Spread your action. Even if your primary book restricts you, having backups lets you continue volume — and keeps your edge intact.

What to Do If You’ve Been Limited or Banned

  • Appeal if appropriate: Some books will review restrictions if you email .
  • Lean into parlay strategies or social sportsbooks: If you’re in a restricted state or limited across the board, use platforms that don’t limit for sharp play — or disguise your edge better.

Final Word: Betting Smart ≠ Betting Loud

The best bettors know how to stay quiet while winning. If you want to avoid betting restrictions, it’s not just about finding the best line — it’s about managing your profile like a pro.

And if you want help doing that, Portfolio EV offers built-in ways to diversify your bet types, hide sharp action in parlays and optimize your betting footprint — all while staying +EV.
