Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss Pick, Odds & Legal States

Updated February 11, 2024 | 7:20 am CDT by Eytan Shander

Most sports betting is broken down to a simple proposition, win or lose. Thanks to odds, juice, and the need for sports books to rake money on both sides – those bets are rarely broken down with a 50-50 split. It’s why we are here to not only discuss the Super Bowl 58 legal states you can play in, but inform with the latest Super Bowl 58 coin toss odds and even toss out a pick for you.

Nothing in the Super Bowl will get fairer odds than the opening coin toss. There’s little rhyme or reason to reaching any conclusion of heads or tails, as it’s the oldest 50-50 split in the book. Forget advancing any previous knowledge of what side the Chiefs or Niners normally call, it won’t help here. For all the shady slots, juiced bets, and more in Vegas – this will be the purest Super Bowl bet you place.

Before we get going with our best Kickoff Touchback bet, make sure to check out OddsShopper ahead of the big game, as our industry-leading tools can give you an edge heading into this monster event.

Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss Pick, Odds & Legal States

Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss Legal States

Bettors often get action on the winner of the coin toss — or the side of the coin lands on. While not all coin toss bets are available in every state, FanDuel listed the following states as ones in which it intended to take online action on the market: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Tails never fails. Unless of course the coin lands on heads. This is the only bet on the board outside of the money line that has the truest split of results. It’s either going to be heads or tails, like either the Chiefs or Niners will win. Spreads, totals, player props – all derived from something but an arbitrary number associated with them, unlike a coin toss or money line result.

A team either wins or loses, including the coin toss, as the decision after calling the coin holds far more weight. Teams can choose to kick or receive, depending on strategy or simply deferring to the second half. There’s no consistent history here, nothing to lay an angle on – not even the repeat element of both teams.

Just like a normal game, regular season or playoffs, the away team will choose what side to call. The Niners have the honors this year, and even if they choose the wrong side, it may be a blessing in disguise to get the ball first and score.

Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss History

The Chiefs lost their first coin toss way back in Super Bowl 1 – losing both the toss and game to the Green Bay Packers. That’s as far back as the coin toss goes, a tradition unlike any other to start a game. Other sports feature feats of strength like a tip or puck drop, but one the most physical sports on the planet chooses to decide the first possession with a large coin. It’s worked as the tradition turned to one of the most popular bets across each Super Bowl. People like an early sweat.

The longest streak either side ever had was heads five times in a row. This will be the Chiefs fourth time in five years at the coin toss, winning their last two but losing their first one to San Francisco. Last year was the first time in nine years that a team who won the coin toss also won the Super Bowl. As it stands, the total tally across 57 Super Bowls is tails at 30 and heads at 27.

Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss Pick

The reality is that the coin could land on heads 45 of the 57 times and it’s still a 50-50 shot on the next flip. It’s the true nature of any bet, it’s just not dressed up in a huge hold or bad odds. There’s no history, no angle, no data that shows why heads is better than tails. There’s nothing to point to in the Niners or Chiefs history. No trend will explain to any novice bettor why heads is better than tails. This is a truly fair bet that has equal odds to everyone.

No sharp bettor is moving the market here, no heavy amount of public money changes the results. It’s heads or tails, and only one never fails.
