Road Courses: What Do We Know So Far?

Portland International Raceway has only been on the Xfinity Series schedule for one season. While that means we don’t have a trove of data to use in handicapping, we do have plenty of recent road course results from the Xfinity Series. We’ll lean heavily on those, especially the results from the Circuit of the Americas earlier this season.

But before we dive into the relevant data points, let’s note the drivers who aren’t Xfinity Series regulars that are entered in Saturday’s race. Jordan Taylor, who substituted for Chase Elliott at the Circuit of the Americas, will drive the No. 10 Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing. Myatt Snider will drive the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. With the NASCAR Xfinity Series betting market unencumbered by Cup drivers, things could get interesting.

Last season saw six road course events in the Xfinity Series. A.J. Allmendinger, then a full-time driver, won four times and finished runner-up once. Ty Gibbs won once and finished second once. Kyle Larson also won once in the No. 88 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports and finished second in the No. 17 for Hendrick Motorsports once. That same No. 17 Chevrolet finished second three times with different drivers.

So what data points do we have for drivers actually competing this week? Of the 12 top-2 finishers in last year’s road course races, only two, Austin Hill and Myatt Snider, will race on Saturday. More shockingly, of the 385 laps led on road courses last season, only 78 (20%) were led by drivers entered in Saturday’s event. Two other drivers, Sheldon Creed and Parker Kligerman, led laps at the Circuit of the Americas this year.

Will Myatt Snider Get it Done?

One of last year’s two entered top-2 finishers, Myatt Snider, is an appealing option on the betting markets. He’ll take over the No. 19 Toyota that Ryan Truex brought to victory lane a few weeks ago. Ty Gibbs finished third in this car at the Circuit of the Americas as well, so we know he is in proven equipment.

Snider has a relatively impressive resume at road courses for the equipment he has driven. He finished second at Portland in the No. 31 for Jordan Anderson Racing last year. He also finished sixth at the Circuit of the Americas that season. He owns six top-10s at road courses in 17 starts, several of which came in with underfunded teams.

Will Parker Kligerman Run Well Again?

Parker Kligerman should’ve gotten a better result at the Circuit of the Americas early in the year. He started fifth, finished the first stage in third and was running second early in the second stage — only for an untimely caution to cost him a ton of track position, leaving him mired in traffic for most of the day.

Expect Kligerman to bounce back in Portland. Although he hasn’t run at this track in NASCAR before, Kligerman is a talented road course driver, which he proved by piloting his No. 75 Chevrolet to victory lane for Henderson Motorsports in the Truck Series at Mid-Ohio last year.
