Free CFB Expert Pick: Over 64.5
Let’s get into the only game in town tonight — the Hawaii Bowl between South Florida and San Jose State. It’s a competitive matchup with a spread hovering around a touchdown, but I’m focusing on the total of 64.5 points. This is a lofty number, but the setup for a high-scoring game is all there.
South Florida comes in at 6-6, and its games are straight-up pinball machines. This team does not play defense. It just gave up 35 points to Rice, 30 points to Tulsa and 24 points to Charlotte — all while scoring 59 or 60 points itself in two of those games. It operates at the single fastest tempo in the entire country, and with that pace comes plenty of scoring opportunities for both teams.
On the other side, we have a 7-5 San Jose State team. While it’s not quite as extreme as South Florida, it also plays at one of the faster tempos in the nation. It’ll be missing star wide receiver Nick Nash, who opted out after a monster season, but its offense still has weapons. The quarterbacks are solid, and it’ll move the ball against a South Florida defense that gives up points to everyone.
Adding to the chaos, San Jose State is down a pair of cornerbacks, which makes its defense even weaker. As for South Florida, the opt-outs don’t even matter because its defense is already a disaster.
This game has all the makings of a shootout. Bowl games can be unpredictable, but we know two things for certain here: These teams play fast, and neither team has answers on defense.
They are in Hawaii, so weather isn’t a concern. The tempo and lack of defensive stops will lead to big plays, chunk yardage and potentially some crazy turnovers to boost the scoring. This line could easily be higher, and I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these teams pushed for 50 points on its own. Even with a competitive spread, the offenses have every advantage in this matchup. Over 64.5 is the play.
